The Issue

As a parent of a child attending Lytham St Annes High School, I am deeply concerned about the recent changes made to the school's uniform policy, specifically the mandatory requirement for students to wear 60 denier or above tights year round when wearing skirts all year round.

Firstly, tights are not economical. I have estimated a cost of £200 per year on tights in contrast to £10 per year on socks. This directly contradicts the stated aim of making uniform as cheap as possible for parents.

The requirement for tights to be worn year round disregards fundamental health and hygiene considerations. During warmer months, tights can cause significant discomfort, irritation, and potential health issues due to restricted ventilation.

Additionally, in 2026, mandating leg coverings for girls sends an outdated message about gender equity. It is essential that our children learn that their educational environment respects and promotes gender equality, focusing on empowering young individuals without imposing inequitable standards based on gender.

What we seek is further consultation with parents regarding this aspect of the uniform policy. Implementing a more flexible rule around tights will not only respect the financial, health, and equity concerns of the student body and their families but will also demonstrate a commitment to collaborative decision-making within the school community.

I urge you to sign this petition to request Lytham St Annes High School to reconsider its mandatory tights requirement and engage with us in a meaningful dialogue that addresses these vital concerns in the best interests of our children. Together, we can influence a policy change that truly aligns with our values and the realities of 2026.
