Change local laws on parking lot booting in Boone

Change local laws on parking lot booting in Boone
The Issue
While spending an evening out with my wife, I became a victim to what felt like a legal trap. We parked our car in what seemed to be the only available space in Boone, NC, a town famous for its vibrant college community. Yet, the parking lot was privately owned, something only faintly signposted, and upon our return, we found our car had been booted. An employee boasted that they booted 15 to 20 cars that night alone. Considering they own multiple lots, this likely earns the owner close to $900,000 annually—an exorbitant profit from what seems like an exploitative practice.
Boone is a college town, home to thousands of students who are often unfamiliar with local parking regulations and susceptible to these tactics. This system of booting cars has the appearance of exploiting both locals and students alike. Many people, whether rushing to a class or enjoying a night downtown, can easily miss inadequate signage, leading to unnecessary fees and penalties.
These private parking owners are leveraging unclear and insufficient signage to ensnare unsuspecting drivers, and it is time for the community of Boone to address this systemic issue. The fine line between legality and exploitation should not be invisible to town residents and visitors.
We need to advocate for clearer signage with mandatory neon warnings or greater visibility measures in privately owned parking lots. Furthermore, these lots should be required to provide a warning before booting, allowing individuals a fair chance to move their vehicles, especially if it's their first violation.
Changing local laws to establish these regulations will not only safeguard the residents and students of Boone but also re-establish trust in the fairness of local business practices. Let’s stand together to call for regulations on these predatory practices, urging local officials to prioritize fairness over fear-driven revenue.
Please join me in urging Boone's town officials to amend these local laws and protect our community. Sign this petition to make a purposeful change for our town’s future and safeguard our community’s integrity.
