The Issue

As a student at the Summit NJ school district, I have experienced firsthand the intrusive nature of the Linewize software installed on our Chromebooks. It's offensive and frustrating to realize how little privacy we are afforded. We should feel secure and respected in our digital environment, but instead, we are met with constant surveillance that stifles our sense of autonomy and trust.

Linewize is marketed as a tool to protect us, but it often feels like an invasive presence monitoring our every move. It's important to acknowledge that the constant monitoring of students' online activities can have a detrimental impact on our mental health and academic performance. Students deserve to learn in an environment that fosters freedom of thought and the ability to explore ideas without fear of constant surveillance.

Furthermore, the effectiveness of Linewize in actually safeguarding students is questionable. Multiple studies and expert opinions suggest that excessive monitoring does not significantly enhance safety and can, in fact, lead to a false sense of security. Rather than investing in tools that invade privacy, the Summit NJ school district should focus on alternative measures that empower students while genuinely prioritizing our safety and wellbeing.

We propose solutions that include enhanced digital literacy programs, open conversations about digital safety, and fostering a culture of trust and responsibility. These measures not only support student well-being but also equip us with valuable skills for the digital age.

Let's take a stand against unnecessary surveillance. We urge the Summit NJ school district to prioritize the privacy and mental health of its students by changing Linewize. Support this petition to help foster a more supportive and respectful educational environment. Please sign this petition to protect student privacy and promote a healthier learning atmosphere.
