My daughter is entering 7th grade in the Leroy School District, and due to current policies, she is unable to participate in an all-girls JV/Varsity wrestling program. Instead, she would be placed in the boys' modified wrestling team, which focuses on folkstyle wrestling—entirely different from the freestyle wrestling the girls’ JV team practices. Four or five other girls will find themselves in this same unfortunate position this year.

This policy is not just a hindrance to my daughter’s athletic development; it stands in stark contrast to the policies of neighboring districts in the Livingston County Athletic Association (LCAA). In fact, Leroy School District is the only district in this association that does not allow 7th graders the opportunity to participate in JV and Varsity sports, despite being merged with the Caledonia-Mumford district for several sports, where their 7th graders enjoy these opportunities.

The new rules regarding 7th and 8th graders playing JV and Varsity sports now allow for oversight from coaches and the Athletic Director within the district. This ensures that any safety concerns can be managed effectively, making way for young athletes to develop according to their potential and interests.

We are restricting the opportunities for our athletes, harming their potential to excel and thrive in their sports of choice. Young athletes who have the talent and enthusiasm to compete at higher levels should not be held back by outdated and unnecessarily restrictive policies. It is vital that we align our district’s sports policy with modern practices that allow young athletes more flexibility and opportunities.

Change is needed, and it begins with our community voicing the desire for equal opportunities for our budding athletes. Immediate actions should include revising the district's policy to reflect those of neighboring districts in the LCAA, thereby supporting our athletes by allowing 7th graders to compete in JV and Varsity sports. 

The School Board is voting on this very issue tomorrow 8/11/2026 at 2 PM at their August meeting.
