Change legislation to mandate solar panels on properties and car parks
The Issue
In Lincolnshire, we are facing a concerning trend where fertile farmland is being converted into solar farms. This practice not only creates unsightly landscapes but also deprives us of the valuable arable land needed to sustain our local food supply. This issue is personal to me, as I live in a region that exemplifies the broader challenges we face across the UK: the need to balance agricultural productivity with the generation of renewable energy.
The UK must prioritize feeding itself more sustainably while also achieving its green energy goals. One realistic and balanced solution is to change legislation to require solar panels on all new build personal and commercial properties. By mandating that at least 60% of available space on these properties be covered with solar panels, we can harness the sun's power without further compromising our precious farmland.
Furthermore, car parks should be designed with both green areas and solar panels covering every available parking space in a 50/50 mix. This approach not only promotes green energy but also assists in offsetting urban heat, providing shaded parking spaces, and improving the aesthetic environment of city landscapes.
This legislative change can lead to significant benefits: reduction in carbon emissions, contributions to the nation's renewable energy targets, and preservation of farmland for agricultural use. It’s a visionary approach that combines environmental stewardship with modern infrastructure planning.
We need to press for legislative reforms that encourage sustainable development. By reforming the laws around how we build and utilize our spaces, we can ensure that solar energy complements rather than competes with our agricultural needs.
I urge you to support this petition to make sustainable development the cornerstone of our future urban and rural planning strategy. Let’s work together for a greener and more self-reliant UK. Please sign this petition to help change the legislative framework for new build properties and car parks to include mandatory solar panel installations.
