Change Kentucky Deer Rehabilitation Regulations

Change Kentucky Deer Rehabilitation Regulations
The Issue
Living in Kentucky as a certified wildlife rehabber, I've witnessed firsthand the challenges associated with rehabilitating deer in CWD (Chronic Wasting Disease) red zones. It's a cause close to my heart and livelihood, one that desperately needs reevaluation and change. Our current regulations are significantly hindering the essential work of rehabilitators like myself who are dedicated to preserving our state's wildlife.
Chronic Wasting Disease is a growing concern, not only in Kentucky but across many states. CWD is a contagious neurological disease affecting deer and other cervids, causing them severe distress and eventually leading to their death. While it's critical to address this disease seriously to protect our wildlife, the current stringent regulations imposed on rehabbers in red zones prevent us from doing our job effectively.
Neighboring states (Indiana for example) have set a precedent with more balanced and feasible regulations for deer rehabilitation in their red zones, allowing for both disease management and wildlife recovery efforts. Adopting a similar approach in Kentucky could empower local rehabbers to save countless deer without compromising public safety or animal health.
With a more flexible regulation system, as seen in Indiana, we can ensure that our wildlife is treated with the care and urgency it deserves while maintaining robust disease control measures. Implementing changes to regulations would provide certified rehabilitators with the permissions and tools needed to rescue and restore our deer populations effectively.
This is not just about regulatory alignment. It's about caring for and safeguarding the natural heritage of Kentucky for future generations. Our state's wildlife is an integral part of our ecosystem and culture, and each deer saved contributes to the biodiversity and ecological balance of our environment.
Help make a positive change. Sign the petition to urge the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources to revise the regulations, allowing for more sensible and compassionate rehabilitation measures in CWD red zones. Together, we can forge a path that supports both the health of our wildlife and the rehabilitation efforts that are vital to their survival.
