Change in Board of Trustees and Add Term Limits

Change in Board of Trustees and Add Term Limits
The Issue
Date: December 31, 2022
The last few months have been difficult ones for many at Alpha Omega. A teacher’s contract has not been renewed, and the Headmaster and Head of Grammar School resigned effective the end of 2022-2023 school year but were asked by the Board of Trustees not to return after the Christmas break. The events that have taken place in the last few months have caused many to question the decisions made and the systems we have in place.
With the loss of our Headmaster, there are currently seven active members on Alpha Omega’s Board of Trustees. Some of these members have served our children’s school for many years. Many great things have been accomplished. They have led Alpha Omega through great times and have brought our school through difficult seasons. However, there are parents, faculty, and staff who believe it is time for a change in leadership. In addition, we believe changes should be made in the policies to give term limits to serving board members.
Recommendation:
- Immediate change in majority of Board of Trustees current members.
- Change in Constitution and By-Laws to give Board of Trustees set term limits.
Reasons for Recommendation:
- The Board of Trustees has made decisions outside of their capacity as outlined in the Constitution, By-Laws, and Policy Manual.
- The Board of Trustees has failed to be transparent in matters involving Alpha Omega’s Headmaster and Head of Grammar School.
- The Board has stated in emails and in addresses to the faculty and staff that they support the Headmaster and his endeavors, however, act in complete opposition to this statement.
- The Board of Trustees failed to inform parents of grammar school children about the resignation of the Head of Grammar School.
- The Board of Trustees addressed members (teachers and staff) with notice of Headmaster and Head of Grammar School resignation without offering a chance for questions.
- The Board of Trustees has not held firm to Alpha Omega Academy’s governing documents and has failed to follow policies stated in the By-Laws, Constitution, and Policy Manual. They have been influenced by others and reactive when proactive leadership is crucial.
We have asked to speak at the next board meeting on Monday, January 16, 2023 at 6pm, concerning the above statements. We are asking those who agree with the recommendations above to sign this petition and make a point to be present at January’s board meeting. If you would like to speak at the meeting please email board@alphaomegaacademy.org to be added to the agenda.
We encourage you to read Alpha Omega’s Constitution, By-Laws, and Policy Manual, all found in the headmaster’s office. Refer to the documents that were amended July 22, 2017, as these are the most recent documents posted.
