Change high school uniforms in NSW for more mufti days
The issue
For too long, the strict uniform policies at high schools across New South Wales have taken away students' ability to express themselves. Being a high school student myself, I understand the frustration that comes from having to wear the same clothes every day without any room for individuality. It's time for a change – and that change is allowing mufti attire three days a week in all NSW high schools.
Uniforms are often touted as bringing discipline and reducing distractions, but do uniforms really achieve these goals? A 2018 report by the University of Melbourne found that there is no significant link between school uniforms and academic improvement. Moreover, a survey conducted by the NSW Student Leadership Council revealed that 78% of students believe that being able to wear mufti would increase their sense of belonging and happiness at school. Personal expression through clothing can make a significant positive impact on student morale.
Today's ever-changing world necessitates flexibility and the ability to adapt. Dressing in comfortable, personal clothing supports creativity and mental well-being. Resources such as the mental health charity, Headspace, note that self-expression is key for improving young people's self-esteem and mental health. By introducing three mufti days each week, students would have the opportunity to adapt to a balance between responsibility and self-expression.
Furthermore, allowing more mufti days won't mean students can behave inappropriately. Schools can establish guidelines ensuring that clothing remains respectful and safe, adhering to school code standards. Other regions and schools worldwide have successfully implemented similar policies, proving that such changes can be realistic and beneficial.
We call on the NSW Department of Education to reevaluate current uniform policies and adopt a more flexible approach. Let's empower our students to express themselves and create an inclusive environment by making three mufti days a week standard practice in NSW high schools.
