Change for better management at Bath & Bodyworks Bay Plaza

The Issue

I am writing this petition against Crystal-Dawn McKenna due to her negligence towards her role as general manager of the Bath & Bodyworks location in Bay Plaza. I was a former employee who was forced to quit due to Crystal’s personal vendettas. I’ve always been a good employee, always looked out for my team, but when it came down to Crystal, she never really got to know me. Crystal has a knack for making herself appear as the fun loving manager who can be relatable who cares for the team, but in all reality she only cares about herself and her appearances before her role as the general manager. The store since she has joined has been absolutely filthy. From the employee bathrooms, to the refrigerator in the back, to the sales floor itself. Customer’s have reported roaches at the registers on multiple occasions. When we would receive visits from the higher ups, our old district manager would give her a warning, and she would spend 10 plus hours, from the day before into the next morning to ensure that the store looked up to par for the visitation so they wouldn’t know how the store looks on a daily basis. She’s constantly in the back of the store, no matter the volume of customers in the store, no matter what sales days, you can most definitely find her in front of the computer. She has even taken this bad habit as far as running the sales floor from the back without physically stepping on the floor. Bay Plaza’s location has for the most part always been a problem store due to management. When I started in May, we had a totally different management team. And we thought it was bad back THEN. Since Crystal has joined our team, there has been no structure, no coaching, no order, no promotion for growth, she doesn’t genuinely feed or inspire her team. She also does not prioritize spanish speaking associates, even after being directed to do so. Spanish customers have been snubbed by supervisors with Crystal’s knowledge and nothing being done about it. She brings down team morale with her open favoritism, she allows some to break the rules, but will heavily target those who she personally doesn’t like. Especially when it comes to your scheduling. The favorites can get 40-70 plus hours, while those that she finds annoying, or too outspoken, or those that receive a positive reaction from the team receive as low as 4 hours a week. She enjoys the chaos within the store, even adds to it as she loves to gossip with the associates even off the clock. She’s well known for underhanded retaliations, especially if you give her any form of pushback. Associates have even come to her about issues they’re having with other associates, and she won’t address the issue, but will let it escalate, or even fan the flames. She can’t deal with confrontation but she’ll gladly watch the problems escalate. She’ll have senior associates reprimand newer associates because she couldn’t be bothered and doesn’t like confrontation. All of the current workers come from the holidays, everyone that worked under general manager L she wants out. They know too much. She’s known to speak on marijuana on the sales floor, or her romances, even with the security guards. There’s a lack of professionalism that’s so apparent, for example when her divorce was finalized, she announced it on our walkie-talkie channel, so every associate that was there, heard her personal business. During the Summer of 2022, we experienced a shopper getting stabbed outside the store, I personally had to tend to her wound before EMT’s could get to her, and I came to work the next day after that traumatic experience not knowing that I was supposed to be asked if I would like to stay home. Crystal took it upon herself to leave not three hours into her shift for a “personal mental health day” as she called it, that very same day. Never having to deal with the situation at hand directly. She has been known leave whenever she feels like it during her shift. She will leave when she wants. The team is well aware that there is no structure, those that try to keep it together within the store are consistently shut down by Crystal, as she likes to remind us that “she’s the boss”. You aren’t allowed to have opinions that goes against hers, its her way or the highway. She’ll ask you personal questions to use your information against you, but it’s not out of genuine concern, it’ll go hand in hand with her personal vendettas. Sometimes SLT’s won’t receive their breaks because she refuses to leave the back, other workers of management cannot sit at the computer to check their own emails and Zipline, or to even sit there just to enjoy their lunch. Or if you’re on your break she’ll either speak to you the whole time or she’ll request that you’ll eat in the back of White Barn which has no chairs, only boxes of product for employees to sit on. I had hit rock-bottom at a point, and had been trying to deal with my mental health. It had begun to get hard for me to even get up out of bed. I had multiple times tried to have other associates fulfill my shift, but due to her personal vendettas towards these said associates she did not allow them to take my shifts and considered me in the books as calling out. In turn, I began to see it taking it’s toll on my scheduling from then on.  I was lucky enough to have a dream job fall into my lap. She does things based off of personal feelings, never professionally, never thinking about whether we’ve got mouths to feed, a roof to keep over our head, bills to pay. So going forth, I began to prioritize the job that was prioritizing me. I changed my availability from 9am-1pm, Mon- Fri. When she had seen my new availability, while I was greeting as front of shop on the sales floor, in front of customers, my assistant manager and another associate she decided to ask about it. “Am I correct in asking that your availability is from 9am-1pm?” I had said yes, and she replied with “well don’t expect to be scheduled too often”, and walks off to go home. We had lost two of our top sellers, they didn’t want to burn their bridges with the company, but due to her not liking the fact that they weren’t all about Bath & Bodyworks, she began to purposely schedule them outside of their availability, so they wouldn’t have been able to fulfill their shifts because they were quite literally building their new employment’s location. When holiday season came, that’s when she wanted and needed their help. Just for her to informally terminate them once the season was over. She also terminated seasonal workers before the season was over without any form of prior notification. She had been scheduling me during the holidays, until one day it just stopped. I had contacted her once I had realized that I wasn’t on the schedule at all, she stated that my 9-1 was no longer necessary, but a 10am-2pm was negotiable. But the previous two weeks I was scheduled all five days 9am-1pm back to back. Eventually, I wasn’t scheduled for a whole entire month. I hadn’t said anything because I didn’t have the energy to continue fighting this fight anymore- because that’s what this has felt like. A never ending fight since I joined this company. I had been put on the schedule after the whole month, but I didn’t have the will in me to continue moving forward with the store. I gave away my shifts, and decided I would no longer be working within the company anymore. I believe that 2300 can and will do better, but not at the rate that it’s going now. I want better for those that actually care about the business, about their employees. I’ve witnessed too many of my teammates receive disrespect, no acknowledgement, and disdain. Bay Plaza has so many associates that have the potential to shine, but keep having their flame dimmed because this is all they know, and what they deal with on a consistent basis. Human Resources has been called many times to address the situations within the store. I’ve spoken directly to a Krista and a Shalov from Bath & Bodywork’s immediate HR team. For absolutely nothing to be done. To K, T, and R, thank you for being the supportive people that kept me and the team going throughout the hard and hectic times. I couldn’t be more grateful for having the joy of working with you all. I do believe that you all will eventually experience the fun and positive work environment you deserve. Hopefully this will make a change.
