The Issue
Throughout my time at school, it has become apparent how greatly final exams can influence our grades. Hardworking students who maintain an A or B average find their final grades severely impacted by a single test, creating unnecessary stress and pressure. For many of us, it's disheartening to see months of effort reduced to a single examination performance.
Final exams are designed to test our understanding of the course, yet they don't always reflect the consistent work we've put in throughout the semester. Factoring a single test so heavily into our final grades doesn't fairly represent our continuous performance and understanding.
Research shows that an overemphasis on finals can lead to increased stress and anxiety among students. According to the American Psychological Association, 61% of teenagers report feeling overwhelmed by the pressure to succeed academically. This constant stress is unhealthy and counterproductive to learning.
I propose that students who consistently achieve A or B grades in their courses should be given the option to opt-out of final exams. This policy would not only reward consistent academic effort but also promote a healthier educational environment. By valuing steady work and knowledge acquisition throughout the semester, we can better support the mental health of students.
