Change fatal drug/drink driving charge to manslaughter
The Issue
In the UK, the current legal classification for deaths caused by drug or drink driving is often categorized as 'dangerous driving.' This legal framework fails to deliver the justice deserved by victims and their families, as it does not adequately reflect the severity and irreversible nature of such actions.
Statistics show that in 2020 alone, there were over 7,800 accidents linked to drink driving, resulting in nearly 230 fatalities. When a person decides to drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol, they are not merely taking a risk; they are making a conscious decision to jeopardize the lives of others. This deliberate action should be recognized for what it truly is: manslaughter.
Reclassifying these offenses as manslaughter would send a clear message that society does not tolerate reckless behavior that results in the loss of life. It would serve as a strong deterrent to potential offenders and provide a sense of justice and closure for the many families who have lost loved ones.
Unlike the current penalties, which might involve as little as a few months of jail time or monetary fines, a manslaughter charge carries a much stiffer penalty, commensurate with the crime. The legal system needs reform to ensure it reflects the societal consensus that driving under the influence is a grave offense that must be met with proportional consequences.
We call upon lawmakers and judicial authorities to recognize this necessary change. By adjusting the charge from 'dangerous driving' to 'manslaughter' for cases involving fatal accidents caused by intoxicated drivers, we can align legal penalties with the seriousness of the crime, thus preventing further tragedies.
Sign this petition to urge the UK government to implement this crucial change in law and stand up for the victims and their families.
