Change Dunbar High School’s Homecoming date to October 17th, 2026
The Issue
Growing up in Lexington, Kentucky, attending Paul Laurence Dunbar High School has always meant participating in time-honored traditions. One of the most cherished is our Homecoming event, a celebration that has traditionally taken place early in the school year, harnessing the excitement of new beginnings and the vibrant energy of autumn. However, this tradition is now at risk.
The current plan is to hold Homecoming on November 14th, 2026. For many students at Dunbar, this date simply misses the mark. Not only does it push the event into colder weather, making outdoor events and festivities less enjoyable, but it also distances the Homecoming from the thrill of the Homecoming Football Game. Traditionally, students celebrate the culmination of the football game with the Homecoming dance. Separating these events undermines the spirit of unity and school pride that we've built over decades.
The weather in October is ideal and significantly contributes to an unforgettable Homecoming experience. Historically, October has provided mild temperatures that allow us to enjoy Homecoming with outdoor activities, games, and parades without the chill of November setting in. Furthermore, holding the event in October has always been an excellent way to boost student morale early in the school year, fostering friendships and building a vibrant community spirit.
Moving Homecoming to October 17th, 2026, will not only align with past traditions but also accommodate the majority of the student body’s preferences. It’s critical that our voices, the very lifeblood of Dunbar’s student culture, are heard. By listening to the current student body, the school administration can demonstrate their commitment to upholding traditions that enrich student life and foster community engagement.
