Change Dubiski Dress Code

The Issue

Following the 2023-2024 school year, there has been a new dress code implemented into Dubiski Career High School’s curriculum. I understand the high school’s goal of trying to teach students career readiness by making sure each student wears job-ready attire. However, these are still high school students, and a lot of them that graduate will find themselves thinking what was this dress code even for? Not all professions (many including nurses *scrubs*, nail technicians *casual wear*, mechanics *work uniforms*, and many more) require such formal wear and students will end up leaving the dress code behind in college/university anyway. Making the dress code that was already very strict even stricter compared to other high schools (and even other high schools that have career training courses) is unnecessary. The school is prioritizing their needs over those of its students because the only beneficial thing it does is makes the school look good. Students do not learn from this overly strict dress code. If this was to fix students who were constantly out of the dress code in the previous years, this is not the way to go because students will continue to break the dress code no matter what. All these rules did is make it easier to break the dress code. In addition, some students can not afford to stay in the dress code. Unfortunately, business attire like slacks, button-downs, khakis, and blazers are priced higher than their casual wear counterparts. This dress code has created another stress to the already stressful high school student life. Instead of focusing on their studies, students are faced with the paranoia of getting a dress code citation. The list is too long for anyone to fully memorize and there are always going to be mistakes. The worst part is that the system designed to catch students out of the dress code is biased. Teachers pick and choose whomever they may like to catch or ignore. In conclusion, Dubiski Career High School should remove the new dress code for the 2023-2024 school year.
