Why this petition matters

Started by Abbey Skief

Policy 4.27 of the High School handbook for the Bentonville School District, talks about how certain items may or may not be worn like leggings or shirts with less than 2 inch sleeves (or 2/ 3 fingers) wide. Times are changing and especially for women it is hard to find appropriate clothing to fit the constraining demands of this dress code. I and countless others have gotten in trouble and shamed just for showing our shoulders. We fail to see how shoulders are distracting. There are several excuses for this dress code rule but it all leads to one point. It teaches girls that they should be ashamed of their bodies and how they look. It shows them that if they get harassed or worse that it's their fault for what they wear. Wouldn't it be better to teach everyone to be confident in themselves and teach boundaries to the young men and women of society? It would not only benefit the kids of society but as they grow they can better society around them. The long-term benefits could be amazing. Please sign to change this rule for the students of today, tomorrow, and many years to come. Thank you!
