CHANGE DRESS CODE AT DEKALB SCHOOLS

CHANGE DRESS CODE AT DEKALB SCHOOLS
The Issue
Dress codes are instilled because certain clothing can be potentially “distracting”. Let's think about that logic. A study by the Cougar Chronicle from California State university shows that 79.3% of the school population that had been dress coded had been cisgender women. With only a small portion of that percentage being men. Could you see where this is problematic? When we live in a society where women are constantly sexualized, especially as teens, we are constantly faced with being slut shamed, criticised for what we wear because it would be “dangerous” and we need to “protect ourselves” or even can just be described as “unprofessional”. However, teachers dress in pants and a v-cut shirt. How is any of the attire students wear at school professional? Today a student was addressed by a staff member who said "Take that hood off or I will personally remove the sweatshirt myself". I think that sentence speaks for itself as the Dekalb staff has handled the dress code poorly. Not to mention overstepping parental authority, seeing that PARENTS should decide what their children should wear. It is also an issue of self expression. Cropped shirts are the most popular item in young women's fashion, in almost every store that is deemed fashionable for teens who dress in a feminine manner, it is incredibly difficult to find a shirt that is not cropped. Dekalb Staff and ESPECIALLY security is known to handle issues with students poorly, through raising their voices, cussing, and aggressively addressing students for small matters such as getting to class on time. Staff should be a support for children but right now we are feeling blatantly attacked. This is repeated where men can wear muscle tees and expose their nipples, where women are punished for showing cleavage, in which some women it is incredibly hard not to show cleavage and express themselves through wardrobe. Men can also show midriff through muscle tees and countless women were dress coded today. Womens bra straps must be covered, but several men's pants were sagging where you could see their entire underwear. This is blatantly unfair and biased on gender.Dekalb has made several new rules. Many are beneficial for students well being and safety which is much appreciated. However enforcing rules such as dress codes and no backpacks or book bags are not. I understand no backpacks are for our safety, but mesh or clear backpacks still promote safety while still being convenient. Not having backpacks contributes to tardiness, effects our education, cuts into our bathroom time causing sanitary issues because we are not able to wash hands for a complete 60 seconds and get to class on time. Students are serious about our safety and several students have supported the idea of metal detectors for our safety for weapon prevention.
