Change district 186 student transportation policy
The Issue
Every morning, my heart skips a beat as I watch my child trek 1.5 miles to school in Springfield, Illinois, knowing that she's not alone in this. Many parents in District 186 share my daily anxiety, as our children navigate busy streets without the safety of public transportation. Our district's policy restricts school-provided transportation to those living 1.5 miles or less than 1.5 miles away, leaving many families in a tough spot.
As parents, we face numerous obstacles. Not all of us have the luxury of flexible work schedules or the means to ensure our children are driven to school. Some of us have disabilities that stop us from driving, or the financial strains prevent us from affording a family vehicle. The current policy doesn't just ignore these challenges, it puts our kids at risk.
Walking a mile and a half might not seem much to some, but for a ten-year-old carrying a backpack heavier than they are, it's an arduous journey. During harsh winters, sweltering summers, and through unpredictable weather, our children brave the elements. This daily journey can be dangerous, with limited sidewalks and busy intersections. Not to mention the amount of registered sex offenders living in our area. 79 registered predators live within one mile of where my child is supposed to walk to and from school. 3 live .25 miles away from the school!!! That’s not safe for any child to walk down the street at 7am to earn their education!
Statistically, young pedestrians are at greater risk near schools—a fact we cannot ignore. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), children account for 17% of pedestrian deaths on weekdays. With so many living within the 1.5-mile zone, our district is inadvertently increasing these risk levels, something we can and must improve upon.
The solution lies in a petition to amend the transportation policy for District 186. We are calling on the district's decision-makers to prioritize safety by extending transportation services to students living within a 1.5-mile radius of their schools. A feasible approach could involve evaluating existing resources, possibly rearranging current bus routes, or exploring community shuttle services.
