Change Connecticut law on charging minors as adults

Change Connecticut law on charging minors as adults
The Issue
I have witnessed too many minors of color in Bridgeport,& CT as a whole , quickly charged as adults without any consideration for their upbringing or the support they might truly need. Instead, these young lives are being sealed away in adult prisons, subjected to horrific abuse both physically and mentally, depriving them of the chance to better themselves or contribute to society. The consequences have been dire, with some taking their own lives due to the trauma inflicted.
Charging minors as adults is an unconstitutional act that violates civil rights, particularly affecting melanated black and brown youths. This practice fails to recognize the crucial developmental differences between minors and adults, and it discounts the potential for rehabilitation.
Statistics show that minors charged as adults are more likely to reoffend upon release, having endured conditions that strip them of their potential rather than nurture it. They face higher risks of assault, suicide, and long-term psychological harm, contributing to a cycle of incarceration rather than breaking it.
Connecticut must adopt a more humane, just approach to juvenile justice that honors civil rights and recognizes the inherent value in each young person. Instead of subjecting minors to adult sentences, we need to provide access to programs that focus on education, mental health support, and rehabilitation like their white counterparts are given .Programs that can help them understand their mistakes, learn responsibility, and re-enter society as productive members.
Reforming the law to prevent charging minors as adults and ensuring they receive age-appropriate facilities and supportive services can break this cycle. Let's protect the future of our youth and ensure all young people are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve, regardless of their skin color.
Please join me in calling for a change in the Connecticut law and advocate for the rights and futures of our minors. Sign this petition to demand justice and transformative reform today.
