Change citizenship eligibility for international HSE doctors- IRELAND 🇮🇪

The Issue

International doctors working under the Health Service Executive (HSE) in Ireland are the backbone of the country's healthcare system. These dedicated professionals leave their countries, families, and lives behind to support the Irish healthcare infrastructure, providing critical care and saving countless lives every day. Despite their pivotal role, they face an immigration system that does not adequately recognize their contributions – currently, the eligibility period for Irish citizenship is set at five years, which we believe is unjust.

The need for reform in the citizenship eligibility period is clear and pressing. International doctors who work within the HSE often face immense challenges including lengthy work hours, high-pressure environments, and the stress of adapting to a new culture, all while offering vital medical services to the people of Ireland. These professionals are not only employees but are invaluable assets to the community at large.

Shortening the eligibility period for citizenship from five years to three would serve as a fitting acknowledgment of their service and commitment to the nation. Recognizing the remarkable dedication and the indispensable role of these doctors would provide them much-needed security and further incentivize others to join the Irish healthcare system, thereby strengthening it. Additionally, it would foster a closer sense of belonging and commitment among these foreign professionals, motivating them to continue their excellent work in supporting patient care and medical advancements.

Not to be overlooked, such a move could positively impact the healthcare sector by reducing staff turnover, attracting more international talent, and ultimately enhancing patient care and system efficiency. Countries like Australia and Canada already have similar recognition systems that reduce citizenship eligibility timelines for skilled workers; Ireland needs to follow suit to remain competitive and retain its best talents.

We urge the Parliament to consider this petition seriously and act to amend the citizenship rules for non-consultant hospital doctors working in HSE. Their relentless contributions to the healthcare service deserve acknowledgment and reward in the form of more accessible citizenship.

Sign our petition to support a healthcare system that values and acknowledges the sacrifices and service of international doctors. Let's push for a change that strengthens our healthcare and supports the heroes who sustain it.
