Change CFISD absence policy for semester finals
The Issue
In our Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District (CFISD), there's a policy regarding semester final exams that is raising significant concerns among students and parents alike. This policy considers excused absences as part of the total absences tally, impacting students' eligibility to skip finals.
Having been a part of this system, I've witnessed firsthand how this rule pressures students to attend school even when they are sick. This isn't just a case of slight discomfort. Within one of my classes, as many as 15 students have been absent due to illness. Worse still, several students dragged themselves to class despite their illness, struggling through the day in an attempt to avoid the consequence of having to sit through finals. This policy indirectly promotes the spread of contagious diseases, placing the entire school community at risk.
One incident stands out to me, highlighting the severity of the issue: a friend of mine became extremely ill after catching the flu at school. Their symptoms were severe enough to warrant a hospital visit. The policy unintentionally fosters a breeding ground for illness, as students prioritize grade benefits over their own health and the wellbeing of others.
By counting excused absences towards the finals exemption, the policy casts a net of unfairness and potential health hazards across the student body. It's not just about missing or attending finals; it’s about doing what’s right for the health and safety of everyone involved in our educational environment.
The solution to this issue is straightforward: CFISD should amend its policy to ensure that excused absences—those due to health concerns, family emergencies, or other legitimate reasons—do not count against students' exam exemptions. Such a change acknowledges the legitimate needs of students and enhances the overall health of the school community.
Let's urge the Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District to reevaluate and change this policy for the betterment of students and staff. A simple change could make a world of difference in preventing illness and promoting a fair academic environment.
Sign this petition to help protect our students and school community from unnecessary health risks and promote a fairer examination policy.
