With Meteorological Summer starting on the 1st of June, why do we classify the British Summer holiday as "Summer", when it is more toward the tail end of the summer season (last week of July until end of End of August).

I propose that we change our British State school summer holiday period to fall within the peak of Summer, being mid June until End of July. These months are mostly the best times for British weather with longer days, and lighter/brighter evenings. This allows holiday makers (staycationers) to do more locally within the UK during the warmer, better days of summer, without having to try and get kids to bed while the sun is shining brightly in the sky!

Towards the end of July and August the nights are already getting longer and sun is setting earlier with less than preferably weather to be out and about (summer of 2023 a perfect example!)

With the current cost of living crisis, not all are in a position to travel abroad so this would benefit the local UK economy and possibly tempt more to stay local for the more decent June/July UK weather. 

I cannot speak for teachers, but I suppose its best to be on holiday during heatwave June/July as opposed to being in a hot classroom.

This would also enable the new school year to start during more preferably end of Summer weather, instead of "beginning of Autumn"

Lets take a lead from some of our European countries  where Nordic countries start school holidays early in June. I've learnt too that even Scotland follows this. 

A possible proposal could look like this:-

• Summer Holidays: 2nd/3rd week June - 1st/2nd Week Aug
• 1st Half Term: 1st/2nd Week October (This would also give provide us the opportunity for better weather during 1st half term instead of the current end of October when clocks go back)
• Christmas Holiday: 2nd Week in December (3 week holiday over the festive season) - why wait until a few days before Christmas to break up?)
• No Change to Spring Term and Spring Half Term.
• Easter Holiday: 1st Week April - 3rd Week April (Extend this but remove Late Spring Half Term)

Extended Christmas and Easter holidays might also bring down the extortionate costs of going abroad with more time for families to stagger holidays and not all flocking for a 1 week return trip to somewhere warmer!

Some Academies are able to implement their own holiday systems, so why not make it National.

Let's take this to Parliament to have it considered for the 2024/2025 year.
