Change Brisbane City flag!

Change Brisbane City flag!

The issue

The flag for the city of Brisbane is need of a redesign, and graphic designers and vexillographers (flag designers) around the city agree that it is not as attractive or easy to reproduce as it could be.

With the City of Brisbane to be on the world's stage in 2032 as host of the Olympics, the flag desperately needs reconsideration. Many residents who live in the city don't realise it has a flag and most cannot recall what it is.

The current design is based on the shield displayed on the Brisbane Coat of Arms. (Please see the update comments for examples of the current flag and Coat of Arms).

Vexillographers propose that a great flag design is simple and easily recognised from a distance, such as when displayed on a flag pole and at events representing the city. The current design is undoubtedly repetitive and cluttered. It has symbols of three caducei, three white stars and six pretzel knots displayed in six different compartments. There is no reasoning for the unnecessary repetition of the current design compared to the panache of a bolder, simpler design.

A redesign of the flag should still reflect the symbolism and colours displayed in that original coat of arms but be kept simple. The flag design should encourage its people to display it proudly, particularly at city events and matters on an international stage. The people of Brisbane are often reluctant to use the flag and almost ashamed to display it in their businesses, homes or on apparel. It should be memorable at first glance and a child should be able to draw it after seeing it just once.

The proposed design on this petition reflects the imagery of the shield and what it symbolises. The wavy blue stripes represent the Brisbane river and Pacific Ocean, respectively, as a symbol of prosperity and identity drawn from them over the city’s history. The design still has the pretzel knot, white stars and caducei, but minimally as the Coat of Arms intended. A great flag should not be bound by a border, so it can be seen without context and orientation, be easily reproduced, and can be printed onto merchandise and apparel with ease.

The design proposed here does not necessarily have to be a final design option; This petition is aiming to change the flag to a simpler, more logical and legible design, whether it is this design or not, to work toward making Brisbane city better represented both with its local people and international visitors alike.
