The Issue

I am a parent with two young children who celebrate different religions, and we will soon face the same challenge: our school calendar does not recognize all major religious holidays equally. Specifically, it only recognizes one major religious holiday per religion. For example, for the next few school years, students have off on Yom Kippur, but not Rosh Hashanah. There are other major religious holidays that our students celebrate that aren't on this list. This approach sends an unintended message that some holidays are more significant than others, which contradicts the values of equality and diversity we strive to teach our children.

By modifying the school calendar to include significant religious holidays each year—Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Diwali, Eid, Orthodox Christmas, Lunar New Year—we not only honor the diverse backgrounds of our student population but also enrich the educational experience for everyone. The children who observe these holidays will no longer miss lessons, and those who do not celebrate will have the invaluable opportunity to learn about and embrace cultures and traditions different from their own. This is not about adding more days off but instead rethinking the approach.

There is undeniable educational value in promoting inclusivity and understanding. According to a study conducted by the Pew Research Center, inclusive school policies contribute to increased student satisfaction and foster a more harmonious school environment. They prepare students for the diverse world beyond the classroom.

We understand that numerically, students celebrating these holidays might be in the minority, but the impact of recognizing their significance is incredibly profound. Acknowledging and celebrating diversity in our school district sets a powerful example for our children and prepares them for a world where intercultural understanding is vital.

Let's take a stand for inclusivity and equality by ensuring our school calendar reflects the diverse fabric of our community. Sign this petition to call on our school board to reevaluate our school calendar to give more days off for major religious holidays. Let's make a positive change that will benefit all of our students.

Please only sign the petition if you live and vote in Bernards Township.

If you feel that a major religious holiday has been  excluded, please let me know.
