Change back the Pensacola Beach sign to "Gulf of Mexico"

Change back the Pensacola Beach sign to "Gulf of Mexico"
The Issue
I recently visited Pensacola Beach for the first time in a while and was absolutely floored by a change to something that should have been left untouched - the iconic sign now reads something new and baffling instead of "Gulf of Mexico." When I saw it, I thought, "What the actual..." It was like a punch to the gut. This isn’t just about how the beach's identity is represented, but how it reflects on us as a community.
We don't need more fuel on the fire of stereotypes. For too long, people have unfairly labeled us as ignorant and out of touch, but that's not who we are. Many of us are just regular, sound-thinking individuals with a strong sense of community and identity. This sign, in its current form, misrepresents Pensacola and belittles our geographical reality - we are proud residents of the Gulf of Mexico.
It's infuriating that a simple yet significant thing like the name could be tampered with and that it might have been influenced by political motives that do not reflect the values of many residents. We must not allow our region to be dismissed and mischaracterized by such a seemingly trivial yet impactful act.
This change does a disservice not only to locals but also to tourists who come from far and wide. Part of the charm of visiting Pensacola Beach has always been the recognition of its relationship to the Gulf. Altering this is akin to dismissing our oceanic heritage and replacing it with something lesser-known or politically charged.
We urge those responsible to listen to their community. Return our sign to its rightful state and, in doing so, help mend the rift these unwarranted changes have caused. The Gulf of Mexico is easily recognizable and brings a sense of pride and belonging. Reinstating the correct title will reaffirm our home’s identity and dignity.
Please lend your support and sign this petition to bring back the correct name, "Gulf of Mexico," on the Pensacola Beach sign.
