Change Australia's Asylum Seeker Policy

The issue

Every day, people who fled war, torture, and persecution are suffering in our name.
Australia’s current asylum seeker policies are not just broken; they are causing real human harm.

Australia is a country built on multiculturalism, compassion, and fairness. Yet right now, over 1,000 asylum seekers remain in detention facilities, despite many being found to be refugees. People have spent 5, 7, even 10+ years in detention centres or temporary limbo. The UN has repeatedly criticised Australia for breaching international human rights standards. Mental health studies show that over 80% of long-term detainees experience severe depression, PTSD, or anxiety. Conditions on offshore centres have been described as “dangerously inadequate,” “unsafe,” and “inhumane” by medical experts and independent reviewers.

These are not just numbers. They are families, children, and ordinary people who risked their lives seeking safety.
No one deserves to escape violence only to be locked away indefinitely with no hope, no timeline, and no future.

Children have grown up never knowing a life beyond detention fences.
Parents have spent years unable to work, study, or provide for their families.
People who survived war are now suffering preventable trauma in one of the wealthiest countries in the world.
Australia spends over $1 billion per year maintaining offshore detention, money that could support community safety, health, and education.
This is cruelty without purpose.
It does not make us safer.
It only damages lives and our international reputation.

We call on the Australian Government to take immediate, compassionate, and evidence-based action:

  1. End indefinite detention
Set a maximum 90-day limit, with community-based alternatives afterward. Proven to be cheaper, safer, and more humane.
  2. Close offshore centres permanently
No more isolating people on remote islands with inadequate medical care.
  3. Provide fair, fast, transparent processing
Reduce the backlog, ensure decisions are made based on evidence, and stop leaving people in limbo for years.
  4. Guarantee healthcare, education, and work rights
People seeking safety must be treated as human beings worthy of dignity, stability, and a chance to rebuild.
  5. Follow international human rights law
Australia signed the Refugee Convention. It’s time to honour it.

Our Vision for Australia is a country that meets fear with compassion. A society that offers safety, not suffering. A community that recognises the humanity in every person, no matter where they were born.

This is not a political issue.
This is a moral issue.
