Change ASU Mascot to the Friendly 'Cairo' the Coatimundi!

The Issue

As a student of Arizona State University (ASU), I am passionate about our school's efforts and identity. However, there is one aspect that has bothered me and many others - our current mascot, Sparky the Sundevil. The character is offputting to some for basic aesthetic reasons and offensive to others according to their cultures and religions.

This petition suggests an alternate character. Those who were raised in Arizona have been fascinated by the unique wildlife that inhabits our beautiful state. One creature stands out in particular - the coatimundi. These adorable animals are native to Arizona and embody qualities such as friendliness, adaptability, and resilience.

The name "Cairo" meaning victory perfectly captures the spirit of ASU's athletic teams. By adopting Cairo the Coatimundi as our new mascot, we can showcase not only our school pride but also celebrate Arizona's rich biodiversity.

Here are some reasons why changing to Cairo makes sense:

1. Positive Representation: Sparky has often been described as creepy or unsettling by both students and visitors to campus events. Many have tried to change the mascot thus far. Replacing him with Cairo would provide a fresh start for ASU's image while promoting positivity among students and fans.

1. Cultural Relevance: The coatimundi holds cultural significance for many indigenous communities in Arizona. By embracing this mascot, we can honor their heritage while fostering inclusivity within our university community.

2. Unique Identity: Many universities across the country have generic or common mascots like eagles or tigers. Adopting Cairo would set ASU apart from these conventional choices and create a distinctive brand image that reflects our local environment.

3. Environmental Awareness: With climate change becoming an increasingly urgent issue globally, choosing a native species as our mascot sends a powerful message about sustainability and environmental stewardship.

4. Diversity Awareness and Inclusivity: By changing the mascot to a religion-neutral mascot, we are sending the message that we are concerned with the comfort of all students in the student body. The Sparky mascot currently poses both ethical and legal questions. Changing the mascot would sidestep these issues in a positive way.

By signing this petition, you are showing your support for a mascot change that reflects the true spirit of ASU and Arizona. Let's come together as a community to embrace Cairo the Coatimundi and create a mascot that we can all be proud of!

Thank you for supporting ASU in a positive change.
