Change Antiquated FAA Policies Surrounding Mental Illness

Change Antiquated FAA Policies Surrounding Mental Illness
The Issue
Current FAA policy bans any current pilot or prospective pilot from taking antidepressant or anti anxiety medication. Pilots are also required to report and penalized if they see a therapist to treat any mental illness.
As current policy stands, pilots and prospective pilots are incentivized to hide their struggles with mental health and are penalized if they seek out any kind of treatment for struggles with their mental health. To assume that every pilot is going to go through life unscathed, without any need to speak with a therapist, or seek out pharmaceutical treatment for anxiety and depression, is unrealistic and an antiquated perspective on mental health. A pilot should be able to seek out mental health care as they need, and not be penalized, this will lead to more pilots getting the care they need and living a happier, and more stable life, which will in turn increase aviation safety. Adequate supervision and checks can easily be put into place that would allow pilots and prospective pilots to care for their health, and ensure aviation safety. It is no secret that there is serious shortage of pilots, and airlines are scrambling to fill seats in the cockpit, but that is going to be a difficult task if applicants for a medical certificate are denied due to antiquated and discriminatory policies such as this.
The FAA is up for reauthorization from Congress this month, let your representatives in Congress and the Senate that you support including language in the reauthorization bill that will require the FAA to change these policies, leading to healthier pilots in the cockpit and therefore safer passengers and skies.
