CHANGE AMERICAN EDUCATION SYSTEM

The Issue

Growing up, I've always felt a strong connection to the land and its history—a history rich with the stories of my ancestors and the untold truths of our collective past. Yet, as I journeyed through the educational system, I found a glaring gap in the teachings about the true indigenous peoples of this land and the intertwined histories of agriculture, warfare, slavery, and Black history.

As a nation, we owe it to ourselves and future generations to ensure that our educational curricula encompass a more truthful and comprehensive account of these pivotal aspects of our past. A well-rounded education includes not only celebrating advancements and triumphs but also understanding the darker chapters of history, helping students to critically evaluate the past and its impact on present-day society.

Current educational programs often overlook the significant contributions of indigenous peoples to agriculture, the brutality and complexity of wars that shaped nations, the horrific realities of slavery, and the vital importance of Black history. According to a 2019 report by the Southern Poverty Law Center, only eight percent of U.S. high schools adequately cover slavery in their curriculum. This shocking statistic highlights a systemic issue that requires urgent attention. Our failure to address these subjects perpetuates ignorance and stunts the progress toward social equity and justice.

We propose to work collaboratively with educators, historians, and community leaders to cultivate a curriculum that reflects inclusive and accurate historical perspectives. This can be achieved by implementing mandatory coursework focused on these areas for all students, providing training resources for teachers, and incorporating voices from indigenous and Black communities in educational content development.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for education reform that embraces our full history, not just fragments of it. Your support is essential for bringing about meaningful change in our education system and acknowledging the rich, diverse heritage that truly defines our nation. Join us in demanding a transformative approach to education that honors all facets of our past.
