The Issue

Imagine the fear and distress of being a parent whose child has gone missing. The sense of helplessness when law enforcement doesn't seem to utilize every tool available to reconnect a missing child with their family as swiftly as possible is unbearable. As a concerned mother and grandmother, I cannot help but place myself in the shoes of parents who, unlike law enforcement, do not have immediate access to public alert mechanisms like the Amber Alert.

The case in Nova Scotia, Canada, where two babies have been missing for two days, brings to light a critical gap in our current system. Despite exhaustive search efforts, these children remain unaccounted for, and if this is a case of abduction, they could be anywhere by now.

Current protocols for issuing Amber Alerts are not sufficient for the urgency required when any child goes missing. In many cases, these alerts are not triggered unless there's clear evidence of an abduction, leaving many vulnerable children at risk.

I propose that any child under the age of 18, especially those with special needs or autism, should automatically trigger an Amber Alert just by being reported missing. The immediate notification could make the difference between life and death, between recovery and permanent loss.

Statistics from reputable sources indicate that the first 48 hours are crucial in finding missing children and bringing them home safely. An early Amber Alert amplifies the search efforts from a few to the many, potentially leading to a quicker resolution and higher chances of the child's safe return.

This petition aims to change the current criteria for issuing Amber Alerts, pushing for an automatic alert whenever a child is reported missing, without the need for additional prerequisites or confirmations of abduction. By signing this petition, you help in making sure law enforcement agencies use every available resource for the timely recovery of missing children. Join us in urging lawmakers to enact this necessary change that can save lives."
