Change Alberta Vehicle Window Tinting Regulations

Change Alberta Vehicle Window Tinting Regulations
The Issue
Petition to Amend Alberta’s Side Window Tinting Laws
To the Government of Alberta,
We, the undersigned, respectfully urge the Alberta Legislature to review and amend the current laws prohibiting side window tinting on passenger vehicles. This change will enhance the safety, comfort, and well-being of Alberta’s drivers without compromising public safety or law enforcement capabilities. By signing this petition, we show our support for revising Alberta’s outdated window tinting laws to better serve its residents and align with proven practices worldwide.
Why This Change Is Necessary
- Reduce Snow Glare: Alberta’s winters pose unique challenges for drivers, including intense snow glare that impairs visibility and increases the risk of accidents. Moderate side window tinting (e.g., 70% visible light transmission) can mitigate this hazard and make roads safer for everyone.
- Protect Against UV Radiation: Exposure to UV rays through non-tinted glass can cause skin damage and eye strain. Side window tinting helps block harmful UV rays to the face and arms of drivers and passengers, improving the health and safety of Alberta residents.
- Enhance Comfort and Safety: Alberta experiences some of the longest daylight hours in summer, leading to glare and heat buildup inside vehicles. Regulated tinting of side windows can improve driver comfort, focus, and reduce accidents caused by sun-related distractions.
- Align with Other Jurisdictions: Many Canadian Provinces and U.S. States allow side window tinting, proving that safety and comfort can coexist with enforceable tinting standards. We, as Alberta drivers deserve the same benefits.
- Environmentally Friendly: Tinted side windows reduce heat buildup in vehicles, leading to less reliance on air conditioning, decreased fuel consumption, and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
What We Propose
We propose that Alberta allows a modest tint on side windows, such as a minimum of 70% VLT (visible light transmission), ensuring safety for law enforcement and other road users.
Update the Traffic Safety Act to reflect modern technology and best practices in window tinting.
