The Issue

Atlantic County Institute of Technology (ACIT) is supposed to be a fair, competitive choice school, but there is such an unfair GPA weighted scale currently in place at our school. It's a serious issue as I have seen firsthand the loss of opportunities for hardworking students who deserve the benefits losing them to undeserving peers; including lost opportunities for the NJ STARS scholarship program. Many deserving students miss out on this life-changing program due to a GPA scale that does not fairly reflect their academic efforts.

The GPA scale is currently 1.0 for CP classes, 1.1 for Honors/DE classes, and 1.2 for AP classes.

This current GPA weighting system at ACIT rewards students who do not put in as much effort, leading to undeserving individuals being recognized over truly deserving ones. This system undermines the principles of meritocracy and discourages hard-working students, directly impacting their future educational and career prospects.

This impacts the potential recepients of the NJ STARS program because due to this a person with A's in a CP class will be ranked higher than someone with A's and B's in Honors or AP classes. This is incredibly unfair because it completely neglects the rigor of the coursework of Honors and AP classes and discourages students to try harder and take harder classes.

We are fighting for the weight of Honors/DE and AP classes to be increased.

We want Honors to be weighted at 1.5 and AP/DE classes to be weighted at 2.0.

We are calling on the administration of ACIT to redraft the weighted GPA scale to ensure a fair and accurate measurement of students’ academic performance. To consider the rigor of courses taken and the realistic grading across subjects.

Signing this petition can lead to a better academic landscape in Atlantic County Institute of Technology, where effort and achievement are justly rewarded. We urge ACIT's administration and the Atlantic County Board of Education to consider this modification for the benefit of all students and the community's future. Please sign this petition to advocate for change.
