We have spent six long years studying at our school in Hartstown, Dublin. It has been a journey of hard work, dedication, and mutual respect for our diverse backgrounds. However, as we approach graduation - a time to celebrate our collective achievements - we find that the ceremony is dominated by Christian religious rituals. This does not reflect the diversity of our year group nor does it give due recognition to the hard work we've all put into reaching this milestone.
In Ireland, approximately 78% of the population identifies as Catholic (CSO Census 2016). However, this statistic doesn't represent every student's faith or lack thereof in our school. Our graduation should be an inclusive event that celebrates each student's individual journey and accomplishments rather than focusing on one particular religion.
We are not asking for the religious ceremony to be edited or changed for an inclusive celebration that respects everyone's beliefs equally. A graduation ceremony should focus on academic achievement and personal growth over these past six years inclusive of more than one religious affiliation.
We urge Hartstown School to reconsider their current format for 6th year graduation ceremonies and make them more inclusive and representative of all students' beliefs and backgrounds. Please sign this petition if you believe in equal recognition and respect for all students at their graduation ceremony.
