Chandlers Hill need a local reserve with a playground
The issue
Chandlers Hill is a residential suburb adjacent to Aberfoyle Park and Happy Valley in South Australia. New sub-division (off Corella Drive is an example) is taking place within the suburb and surrounding areas, yet there is not one local reserve with a playground for the Chandlers Hill community. If you live near Mount Malvern Road (Chandlers Hill/ Aberfoyle Park) for example it is 2km to your nearest reserve with any facilities such as a playground, seat or shelter. This is not in accordance with the City of Onkaparinga's Open Space Strategic Management Plan (can be viewed on Councils website).
The City of Onkaparinga's Open Space Strategic Management Plan 2018-23 states that "a park with a playspace will be provided within 500m walking distance of most households". The Strategy also states that Council will "investigate opportunities to acquire land when there is under supply of open space in an area."
There is an under supply of public open space in Chandlers Hill. Letters have been sent to the City of Onkaparinga Council - yet currently they have no plans to investigate or acquire any open space in Chandlers Hill despite there being a requirement in the City of Onkaparinga Open Space Strategic Management Plan 2018-23 for one local reserve for every 1200 people.
Onkaparinga Council have responded that the land in Chandlers Hill is too steep for a local reserve. While it is true that the land can be steep there are a number of vacant privately owned land parcels in proximity to housing that could easily be purchased and developed into a space. There is even funding through the State Government Open Space Grant Program for 50% funding for Councils when there is limited supply of open space. Some of the best and most interesting play spaces are built on steep land including Ramsay Place playground in Noarlunga centre & The Big Slide Park in Craigburn Farm. Steep land is not a barrier, it can be an opportunity!
A total of 90% of Chandlers Hill community are family households. This is far greater than the South Australian average which is 68% (2021 census data). The community of Chandlers Hill deserve a space that they can play, relax and recreate. Please sign this petition if you live in proximity of this suburb and agree that a local reserve /open space should be provided for the Chandlers Hill community.
