Get rid of WebAssign grading for math exams - UW Madison
The Issue
The UW-Madison Math department is using WebAssign as a way of grading exams. For many classes, they assign a weekly exam that is worth 7% of the students' total grade, with 5% being graded from answers submitted in WebAssign, and only 2% being graded from their written work. This means that, with 11 of these such exams being taken throughout the semester, 55% of their final grade is graded through WebAssign. WebAssign does not give any partial credit. Submissions must be exact, otherwise the program reflects that the entire problem is incorrect. This is very different from how exams were graded previously, where errors such as missing a negative sign or errors when working with parentheses, only took away a few points from the overall score of the problem. With the change to online, many students struggle with learning as well as they did during in-person instruction. It is not fair to students to make such a large and important part of their final grade based off of a program that allows for no leniency. By making such a large part of their grade based off of a program that allots no partial credit, the math department is making answers that would typically only have 1/2 to 2 points taking off fully incorrect, and is making success in their courses exponentially more difficult than when classes were in-person. This contrasts the University's goal of making the transition to online classes fair and relatively simple to students, and should be changed to a system that gives students the partial credit they deserve.
