Option of remote instruction at UC Davis

The Issue

The COVID Delta variant is severely more dangerous and transmissible than the original COVID-19. Since June, 2021, the US has seen a huge uptick in daily cases and hospitalizations that continues to increase. Furthermore, continuing to propagate this virus can lead to other mutations, such as the Delta Plus or Lambda variants, which are both not well studied and may have even more serious symptoms.

Many students may be at high risk or uncomfortable being exposed to the dangers of large gatherings in enclosed environments. Even though vaccines and masks may be mandated on campus, it is difficult or impossible to determine if a colleague has been to an area with an outbreak.

UC Davis is known for having one of the most health-conscious student populations of universities in the US. This is partly because UC Davis always puts health first. This petition urges the UC Davis leadership to require professors to provide the option of taking classes fully remote in Fall 2021. This petition is not asking to require remote instruction - but the option would provide security to everyone's health. These benefits are not limited to the UC Davis population, but are extended to other communities as well; as we stay distanced, we slow the spread and slow the mutation of new variants for everyone.

The UC Davis student population, students and staff alike, have already proved to be extremely successful with remote instruction. It is a small price to pay for everyone's health.

Facts: (TL;DR)

  • The Delta variant is attributed to over 80% of new COVID cases in the US. (yalemedicine.org)
  • For unvaccinated individuals, the Delta variant poses huge health risks. (yalemedicine.org)
  • People under the age of 50 are 2.5 times as likely to be infected. (yalemedicine.org)
  • Vaccinated individuals have developed symptoms from the Delta variant. (healthline.com)
  • Propagating the Delta variant can lead to other, more dangerous mutations. (ucdavis.edu)
