Remove KU School of Music Dean Robert Walzel from the KU Sexual Assualt Task Force

The Issue

KU School of Music Dean Robert Walzel has no business being on the Sexual Assault Task Force created at the University of Kansas. Several Music professors have been sexually inappropriate with KU Students and Dean Walzel has continually done nothing. Dean Walzel has even approved a professor to have a sexual relationship with an undergraduate student. When I reported a music professor for sexual harassment, Dean Walzel refused to accommodate me during the investigation, saying he couldn't do anything until IOA had completed their investigaion. When the investigation was over, my degree was threatened for not taking the graduate music diagnostic exams and Dean Walzel told me if I wanted to finish my degree, I would have to finish my lesson credits at another accredited institution and transfer them back. The professor who sexually harassed me, told me I didn't have to take the exams and there was no reason that I could not have been informed of taking my lesson credits at another institution a year earlier, at the start of IOA's investigation. It was evident to all involved that my professor could not maintain a professional academic relationship with me and that studying with him was no longer an option. Dean Walzel later stated that the report from IOA did not make the sexual harassment sound that bad. All sexual harassment is that bad, especially from a professor.

Further, when quietly protesting the matter on the University of Kansas campus, Dean Walzel asked what I was trying to accomplish. He implied I was disrupting the educational process and stated several times, "We want you to graduate." My protest would not and should not affect my graduation. I told him he didn't care about the students. When he said he did, I said, "Just like you gave the orchestra director permission to sleep with another student?" He responded angrily, "How do you know about that?"

Dean Walzel knows nothing about sexual violence and he does not support survivors. He supports perpetrators as evidenced above. He's another older, white male in a position of power. He needs to step down from KU's Sexual Assault Task Force.
