I live in Glasgow, and like many of us, I am an ordinary working person trying to make ends meet. Recently, the Glasgow City Council announced an alarming increase in parking permit fees. The cost has risen from £85 a year to a steep £150, and if you own a second car, the charge skyrockets to £295. This is a huge financial burden on residents, including myself, who are already stretched thin with the current economic environment.

We are already paying a significant amount in council tax, which is supposed to cover the cost of basic amenities and services. Yet, we find ourselves facing additional financial demands when all we want to do is park our cars outside our homes. Many of us rely on our vehicles for work, family responsibilities, and day-to-day life. The hike in fees is not just unreasonable; it is extortionate and pushes us into financial strain.

It's crucial to understand that parking should be accessible and affordable. Predominantly, this fee increase will disproportionately impact working-class families who cannot afford such exaggerated expenses. As residents of Glasgow, we deserve fair treatment and consideration, and it is imperative that the Council revisits this decision and looks for an alternative solution.

We propose that the Glasgow City Council either reconsider this fee increase or introduce measures to alleviate the burden on residents such as tiered pricing or exemptions for certain demographics like low-income households or essential workers. Implementing a more equitable system will not only ease our financial strain but will also demonstrate that the Council values and supports its local community.

There are many ways the Council can address parking issues, like improving public transportation, investing in more parking spaces, or creating schemes that incentivize car pooling. These steps would be more practical solutions that benefit everyone without disenfranchising residents.
