Challenge the Removal of Bird Feeders at Meadowview

The Issue

A decision by Avesta Housing management necessitates elderly residents at Meadowview in Gray, Maine to remove their bird feeders by December 16th, citing rodent concerns. Although it is valid to be cautious around rodent issues, this decision discounts the significant value birdwatching has on the well-being of our elderly citizens. For many seniors, particularly the homebound or those living alone, birdwatching is more than a pastime -- it's an essential link to the outside world and nature.

Birdwatching has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety levels, adding to its vitality for mental health, especially amongst older individuals (American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, 2017). The sudden termination of this activity could negatively impact their emotional wellbeing. We believe other strategies can be implemented to balance the rodent problem without compromising an activity that plays a therapeutic role in our seniors' lives.

In line with this, we urge Avesta Housing to reconsider their decision and find a more balanced approach that won't detract from the quality of life of our valued seniors and adversely affect wildlife that have become dependent on these feeders.
