The Issue

As a student who has experienced body-shaming and judgement due to their choice of schoolwear, I write this appeal from a deeply personal perspective. My experience is not isolated. Across the country, many women share similar stories of being blamed and shamed for wearing clothes such as tight jeans, cropped shirts, and shorts; clothes that simply make us feel comfortable. We are subjected to derogatory terms and unwanted sexual attention. My personal incident, among many others, was shrugged off by school authorities who instead incriminated me for my clothing choices.

School dress codes should teach respect, not strengthen the stigma against comfortable yet unconventional clothes. A 2018 national survey by the National Women's Law Center found that 35% of girls reported being unfairly disciplined because of dress codes, versus only 8% of boys. Dress codes foster judgment, body-shaming, and reinforce harmful stereotypes.

Time to change! This petition seeks to break down the patriarchal norms that our current school dress codes uphold, where instead of teaching boys how to respect women, girls are taught to fear unwanted attention and judgement caused by their clothes. We ask that schools revise their dress codes to allow female students to wear clothes that make them feel comfortable, without fear of judgement or repercussion.

Join us in this fight for equal treatment and freedom to wear comfortable clothing at school. Please sign this petition to support our cause and spread the word.
