Challenge Deer Lake Town Council's development proposal
The Issue
As property owners and taxpayers residing on Trailer Court Road in the Town of Deer Lake, Newfoundland and Labrador, we are deeply concerned about the recent proposal by the Deer Lake Town Council to allow a commercial development project in our quiet, residential neighbourhood. We cherish our tight-knit community, where we enjoy safety, serenity, and a strong sense of belonging. This project threatens to disrupt our lives, increase traffic, and diminish our property values.
The proposed development would bring heavy construction equipment and increased vehicle traffic, posing significant safety risks for our families and endangering our children who play freely on our streets. The construction phase alone could damage our infrastructure, leading to deterioration of our roads, increased noise pollution, and disruption of our peace and quiet. Additionally, property prices in areas surrounding similar developments have suffered losses ranging from 5% to 10%, as evidenced by municipal records spanning across Newfoundland and Labrador.
Moreover, this development proposal did not include adequate consultation with the affected community members. We believe it is essential for local authorities to engage with those whose livelihoods and welfare will be most impacted. Our community's voice deserves to be heard, and our concerns must be addressed before any project is approved. Transparency, fairness, and public safety should be the guiding principles in decisions affecting our town.
We urge the Deer Lake Town Council to reconsider this development and to consult more effectively with residents. We propose alternatives such as a community engagement session or a town hall meeting where all stakeholders can openly discuss and debate the impact of this project. Furthermore, we suggest conducting an independent study to evaluate the environmental and social impacts on our neighbourhood.
In standing together, we can protect our community’s future. Please join us in opposing this proposal by signing this petition. Let us show the Deer Lake Town Council that we value our community’s character and are committed to preserving it for generations to come.
