IL Rep. Jim Sacia's proposed Animal Facility Bill HB5143 (The Ag-Gag Bill) is working its way through the Judiciary I - Civil Law Committee. (The Bill would make it a felony to go undercover in a livestock facility and to create or possess a visual or sound recording of occurrences at the facility without the consent of the owner. Violators would be subject to penalties, damages, court costs, and attorneys fees.) What do they have to hide? Passing laws favoring Big Agriculture is the newest industry strategy. Behind the closed doors of the livestock factory farm, the producer and employees labor in secrecy, out of the glaring eyes of inspectors and members of the public. If the CAFO industry were operating with good practices, there would be no need for the industry representatives to support a whistleblower restraint rule. One of the world’s best known meat industry whistleblowers, Upton Sinclair, went undercover in Chicago’s slaughterhouses in 1904. He portrayed his findings in vivid detail in his novel, The Jungle. Readers were horrified by the disgusting conditions. If that law existed 108 years ago, The Jungle would not have been written. The Big-AG Industry is threatened by those who go on farms and take pictures of activities that most consumers would find completely unacceptable, just as they did in Upton Sinclair's case.
