Soylent has been banned from distributing products in Canada due to a mismatch in the nutrients in their products and the requirements of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). Many Canadians rely on Soylent products to assist in living a healthy, balanced lifestyle. For over 2 years, Canadians have been able to subscribe to, or make one-time purchases of Soylent products. In October 2017, the CFIA determined that Soylent products no longer met the requirements of a meal replacement and immediately halted shipments in Canada.
Excerpt from Soylent.com Availability Update - Letter from the CEO:
"The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) recently informed us that our products do not meet a select few of the CFIA requirements for a “meal replacement.” Although we feel strongly that these requirements do not reflect the current understanding of human nutritional needs, we respect the CFIA’s regulations and will fully comply with any regulatory action they deem appropriate. Unfortunately, this means we are unable to ship any additional product to our Canadian warehouses or sell Soylent to our Canadian customers until this is resolved."
The CFIA classified Soylent products as meal replacements, and subsequently, told them they do not qualify as an appropriate meal replacement. We need a statement from the CFIA explaining why Soylent was able to distribute their products in Canada for over 2 years, and is now not meeting their requirements. As well, we would like the CFIA to look at their requirements for meal replacement products and ensure that they are up-to-date with the current needs of Canadian consumers.
