Cessation of Animal Abuse and Mass Killings of Stray Dogs by Ethiopian Government
The Issue
Urgent International Petition forwarded by Anette Jensen/ Denmark, David Mascall/England Kenya, Connie von Moos/ Denmark, Monica Branca/ France, Soumoyadeep Bose/ India, Connie G. Padilla/ Philippines, Jolanta Kordos/ Polland, Zoltan Elinger/ Hungary, Muhamet Emini / Kosovo: Cessation of Animal Abuse and Mass Killings of Stray Dogs in Ethiopia ordered by the government.
This letter serves as a petition to the Esteemed Members of the International Community.
We express our profound concern and outrage regarding the ongoing and despicable abuse and mass killings of animals (Specifically dogs that have been abandoned by their owners while moving away because of infrastructural changes happening in the cities of Ethiopia). Despite Ethiopia's signing of international agreements aimed at protecting animal welfare, these horrific acts continue unabated, causing immense suffering and violating fundamental ethical principles.
Specifically, we bring to your attention the following critical issues:
Widespread Cruelty: Reports and documented evidence reveal pervasive acts of animal cruelty, including but not limited to, inhumane killing, neglect, and deliberate acts of violence against stray dogs and those that have been pushed out of their homes and forced to be separated from their families.
Mass Killings: Large-scale culling operations and other forms of mass killings are reportedly being carried out, often without adherence to humane methods, resulting in prolonged suffering such as poisoning and strangulation.
Lack of Enforcement: The existing legal frameworks and agreements, despite Ethiopia's commitment, are demonstrably ineffective due to a lack of enforcement and accountability.
Environmental Impact: These actions like poisoning have severe consequences for the environment, potentially disrupting ecosystems and contributing to biodiversity loss in addition to causing health issues to humans.
Violation of International Agreements: Ethiopia's continued disregard for international agreements related to animal welfare undermines the global effort to establish ethical standards of animal treatment.
We understand that Ethiopia faces numerous challenges, but the systematic abuse and mass killing of animals cannot be justified or ignored. We believe that the international community has a moral obligation to intervene and assist in addressing this crisis in Ethiopia.
Therefore, we urge and emphasize that it is necessary for the international community to:
- Demand Accountability: Call upon the Ethiopian government to immediately enforce existing animal welfare laws and hold perpetrators of animal cruelty accountable.
- Investigate and Monitor: Establish independent mechanisms to investigate and monitor the situation, ensuring transparency and accountability.
- Promote Education and Awareness: Support initiatives to educate the public and raise awareness about animal welfare and its ethical treatments.
- Apply Diplomatic Pressure: Urge the Ethiopian government to prioritize animal welfare and adhere to international standards.
- Other Solutions: Consider other solutions, if the Ethiopian government fails to comply with international regulations and demands for ethical treatment of animals.
- We urge and emphasis: We strongly urge the Ethiopian Government and the relevant appointed office to recognize the gravity of the situation and implement ethical solutions, including vaccination, identification (through methods such as collaring and dating), and comprehensive sterilization programs.
We believe that by working together, we can bring an end to the suffering of animals in Ethiopia and ensure that the principles of compassion and respect for all living beings are upheld. We implore you to take swift and decisive action to address this urgent matter.
We stand in solidarity with the animals of Ethiopia and call for immediate international intervention.
Sincerely,
