Central Mosque Northampton Trustees to address concerns raised by the community.

The Issue

This petition has been created to gather support and bring about positive change at Central Masjid Northampton (CMN), 112-116 Abington Avenue, NN1 4PD.

The Masjid was established by four trustees in 2001 and to this day they continue to manage without renewing the mandate or any transparency and accountability. The Masjid has 4 members, 4 trustees and 4 directors. All these positions are held by the same 4 individuals. Two of the trustees, as well as the wife of one of them, are also paid employees of the masjid. They have been so since 2001. The masjid premises (building and car park) is registered in the name of two of the trustees and not the trust. They are in clear violation of the Charity Commission rules. A list of 12 serious concerns were raised formally in writing, which included the management structure and banning of the second Imam from entering the Masjid due to his whistleblowing. Several members of the community have tried to mediate on individual capacity as well as the Northamptonshire Council of Mosques. The 4 trustees refused any mediation or to engage with anyone. They refused to accept the letter from the community.

By signing, you are demanding the following:

1. The management of the Masjid must be transparent to the public and must act in accordance with the constitutional requirements and or the guidelines set out by the Charity Commission

2. Resolve all conflicts of interests in the Masjid management, including nepotism

3. The membership of the Masjid should be open to all, not just to the four trustees

4. Like all other masjids and UK charities, there must be a management committee independent of the trustees

5. The Masjid property was purchased with public money, so it must be registered under the trust and not individuals

6. The trustees must get mandate from the public to continue to serve the Masjid on a regular basis. The trustees did not inform the public that they are lifetime trustees (when they collected the money from the public)

7. Trustees must clear up allegations of irregularities raised, either procedural or financial, and answer to the public. If the trustees fail to address the issues, the signatory agrees that this petition may be used to support action via the Charity Commission or other regulatory bodies and or legal challenge in the courts.
