The Issue

title of petition with logos of the Minneapolis Federation of Educators teacher logo , the ESP and then logo four icons displayed in a horizonal table inclusion of people with disabilities , accessible spaces, testing areas

We stand with all individuals with disabilities currently utilizing the Minneapolis Public Schools- Center of Adult Learning (students, volunteers, staff) and we will fight for the following core demands:

Accessibile Entrances

  • push button for 1st floor testing center
  • push button entrance for 1st floor office
  • push button entrance from parking ramp underground into the elevator lobby
  • push button entrance to at least 1 bathroom/ floor

Accessible School Spaces

  • Utilization of mics for students and staff during meetings
  • Braille signage for room numbers
  • Accessibility for all users of Promethean Boards

Without these changes individuals with disabilities in our learning community unable to :

-enter the building freely without a badge swipe of a staff member

-enter the office to register for class or make inquiries to office staff

-access the bathroom freely

-hear meeting information without asking presenters to "speak up"

-write on the promethean board spaces

-utilize accessible designated parking spaces in our parking garage  and enter the basement elevator lobby

-access the testing areas without force beyond ADA recommendation of 5N to open closing the doors.

By signing this petition, I demonstrate support of the accessibility demands listed above and a commitment toward advocacy of inclusive spaces for individuals with disabilities within Minneapolis Public Schools community. We urge MPS leadership to listen to and respond to students and staff with disabilities and to ensure their about to advocate without fear of retribution.
