Centennial Student started this petition to Centennial High School and

Blatant transphobic and homophobic harassment has occurred at Centennial High School. Students at Centennial High School in Bakersfield, CA, were bringing Trump 2024 flags to school to combat Pride Month. Many of these same students were harassing and bullying members of the LGBTQ+ community at school. There were some who were not apart of the Trump flag movement who participated in this harassment. A lot of the harassment included derogatory slurs and gestures. This got to such a point where a freshman student filmed himself urinating on a pansexual pride flag, that he allegedly stole, in the campus restrooms. Several staff members were aware of this behavior and did nothing to intervene. This is blatant enabling of derogatory behavior, and needs to be stopped.

This kind of conduct breaks two clauses of the non-discrimination policies for all Kern High schools, including Centennial. “Pursuant to law and District policy, no person shall be subjected to discrimination on the basis of disability, gender, gender identity, gender expression, nationality, race or ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or any other characteristics that is contained in the definition of hate crimes set forth in Section 422.55 of the Penal Code.”

Under another clause, BP 5131.2, “The Board of Trustees recognizes the harmful effects of bullying on student well-being, student learning, and school attendance and desires to provide a safe school environment that protects students from physical and emotional harm. No individual or group shall, through physical, written, verbal, visual, electronic, or other means, harass, sexually harass, threaten, intimidate, cyberbully, cause bodily injury to, or commit hate violence against any student or school personnel, or retaliate against them for filing a complaint or participating in the complaint resolution process.”

These policies are here to protect the students, and you need to follow through with that promise. If this behavior is enabled, it only allows this kind of practice to escalate. We ask of Matthew Guinn and the Centennial staff to take proper measures against those who participated in this awful conduct.
