At a Clark County School District board meeting last week, trustee Lorena Biassotti wore a T-shirt branded XX-XY, merchandise from a company that pushes the idea that being transgender isn't real. Resident Amanda Nuchols didn't let it slide. She stood up and told Biassotti exactly what the shirt signals to the students she's supposed to serve: "You do not belong here. Your safety is not our priority," Nuchols said, according to LGBTQ Nation.

This isn't a one-time incident. At a 2023 board meeting, Biassotti argued that supporting a transgender student's identity is the same as "normalizing mental illness" and suggested pedophilia belongs in the same conversation, according to the Las Vegas Sun. A student petition calling for her removal also cited comments where she referred to transgender girls as "boys pretending" to be girls.

Nuchols told the board that transgender and nonbinary students already face far higher rates of anxiety, depression, and bullying than their classmates, and that they count on school leaders for protection, not hostility broadcast from the dais.

A school board seat carries real authority over curriculum, safety policy, and how students are treated every day. When a trustee uses that platform to display contempt for a group of students, it tells them their well-being isn't a priority in the room where decisions about their education get made.

Clark County families deserve school board members who advocate for every student, not ones who publicly demean some of them. This petition calls on the Clark County School District Board of Trustees and the district superintendent to censure Lorena Biassotti for conduct unbecoming a trustee and adopt a clear code of conduct barring targeted hostility toward students at board meetings.

Sign the petition to demand accountability, before more students learn their safety isn't a priority to the people leading their schools.
