Celebrating our Indigenous people is significant: Make Mabo a public holiday.
The issue
There are so many days in Australia that go unnoticed, just like any other Tuesday, people don't know they exist.
Australia has a range of dates that celebrate and convey the significance of our Aboriginal and Torres strait islander people. However, they are barley known and celebrated. Chewing away at the pride out Native people have.
Mabo day is an annual commemoration held on June 3rd. It is a Torres Strait islander holiday that falls during National Reconciliation Week in Australia. We need to raise awareness around these special dates to help Indigenous Australians feel respected and acknowledged. It's one step towards a more reconciled Australia.
Let's make Mabo day a public holiday!
