Celebrate Diwali with Lights, Not Smoke – Stop the Pollution Spike
The Issue
Imagine walking outside and feeling like you’re in a thick fog—except it’s not fog, it’s poisonous smoke. Imagine a 1-year-old child developing asthma, or your loved ones gasping for breath, all because of a few hours of firecrackers.
Every Diwali, air pollution in India shoots up to deadly levels. Last year, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) crossed 500+, which is classified as “Severe Hazardous.” To put this in perspective:
AQI 0–50 = Good (fresh air)
AQI 300+ = Emergency for lungs
AQI 500+ = Poisonous air, like smoking 40 cigarettes a day
In 2022 and 2023, during Diwali week, Delhi’s AQI stayed above 450–500 for several days. That means:
Children are twice as likely to develop asthma.
The elderly face 5x higher risk of heart attacks & strokes.
Pets choke, birds collapse mid-air, and hospitals see a spike in breathing problems.
Firecrackers give us only a few minutes of noise, but the smoke stays for days, turning the festival of lights into a festival of suffocation.
We are not asking to stop Diwali. We are asking for a smarter celebration:
Diyas, rangolis, sweets, lights, eco-friendly crackers (if at all).
Happiness without harming our own families.
A festival that shines without choking the air.
By reducing firecracker use, we can breathe easier, protect our children and elders, and set an example for a cleaner India.
💡 Let’s light up Diwali with joy—not smoke. Sign this petition to reduce firecracker pollution and protect the air we all share.
