Cease the Use of Schools as Polling Places for Enhanced Child Safety

The Issue

This petition stems from a deeply personal concern- the safety of our children amidst the increase in school shootings. As a parent and concerned citizen, I believe we need to do everything possible to keep our children safe. Our schools should be sanctuaries for learning, development, and growth. Yet, come election season, these institutions transform into polling places, thereby presenting potential security threats.

School shootings in the United States have become a disturbing trend, and statistics are worrisome. According to Everytown Research, as of 2021, there were at least 73 incidents of gunfire on school grounds, resulting in numerous injuries and deaths. This statistic clearly demonstrates the need to reevaluate the security of our schools.

It is also important to note that on election days, many additional individuals, unrelated to the schools, have access to school premises. This influx of people increases the risk of potential breaches in safety. If our treasured educational institutions are to continue being used as polling places, necessary and stringent security measures need to be implemented.

It is high time that we rethink our approach to safeguarding the lives of our children, our future. They are our highest priority, and therefore, should be the highest priority during elections as well. This can start with a simple yet impactful change - ceasing the use of schools as polling places. Ensuring the safety of our children is a responsibility we all share. Let's act now, to preserve their present and secure their future. Sign this petition to demand local, state, and federal authorities to consider alternative, secure locations for polling.
