Cease the Use of Horseshoe Crab Blood in Pharmaceutical Production

The issue

Immense and unnecessary suffering is inflicted upon horseshoe crabs by the pharmaceutical industry. Their blood is routinely exploited for the purposes of producing vaccines and medicines, an act which undoubtedly inflicts pain upon these creatures (studies have shown crabs feel pain). The process is not only a serious animal rights concern affecting the crabs themselves, as an estimated 15% of them die during the process, but also threatens the delicate ecosystems they inhabit.

The consequences of this exploitation stretch further into our global ecosystem, damaging not just the individual horseshoe crabs, but also the endangered Red Knot bird which heavily depends on them for food during long migrations. With the continuous decline of horseshoe crabs (who have inhabited Earth for over 400 million years), a simultaneous decrease in Red Knot bird population has been observed.

Certainly, medical advancements and the security of human health are of utmost importance, and it's the responsibility of our society to seek alternatives that do not exploit or harm other living beings. Synthetic detection methods that don’t involve animal suffering already exist, it's imperative the pharmaceutical industry moves towards these less harmful practices.

Moral and ethical considerations demand a change in these practices. For the sake of these crabs, the Red Knot birds, and our ecosystems, we call on pharmaceutical companies to rethink their practices and seek ethical and sustainable alternatives. Spread the word, raise awareness, and join us in asking pharmaceutical companies to cease the use of horseshoe crab blood. Please sign this petition.
